Today I've been thinking about a Stone Soup comic from who knows how long ago when the mom tells Holly to go to bed and Holly says something about how she hasn't started her homework because she had to make the perfect study playlist first. Story of my life today. I decided I needed a study break after writing each sentence of my essay.
(I think it was Stone Soup. It sounds like something that would be in Stone Soup.)
On Saturday nights, we have informal hall which means we don't have to wear our gowns. Tonight's dessert was ice cream, but in reality, was MAGNUM BARS. I can definitely handle being a student at a college where Magnum bars are part of the meal plan.
One of my entertainments of late has been this: "BERNAYYYYYYY! BERRRRNAYYYY!" The girl who lives directly below me is named Bernie. Her friend Dean, who has a very very thick Northern accent, is constantly calling for her to come outside and have a cigarette. It would be obnoxious if it wasn't so hilarious.
Ah yes, I had my first tutorial or "tute" for short. It went well - though to be fair, my expectations were that I would be discovered to be unworthy academically and kicked out. My tutor went through our papers and challenged us on certain points. He also had made a list of what he had expected to be included and then we went through that and discussed readings. Then he went through each paper and mentioned stylistic things. All in all, it was very constructive and the individual attention was helpful. I can already tell that I'm going to get back to WashU and have a weird transition into large impersonal lectures. Not that I really take those, but that's not the point.
Yesterday, Elena, Steve and I decided to take an American study break and took Steve's frisbee to throw around in the park. We would have played on the quad were it not for this rule I found in the Handbook:
"Because of the hazard to plants and to windows, no games of any kind, even informal throwing of a projectile, may be played in any of the quadrangles."
So we took our informal throwing of a projectile to the park, which is literally across the street, and ran on the grass with abandon. Keble College is serious about its lawns. There is a gardener who sweeps the grass every day to make stripes on the lawn. I watched him do it yesterday and wondered how exactly I ended up somewhere that takes its yard care more seriously than WashU. I didn't think it was possible!
I should get back to writing my paper which has been slowly draining me of life. Coming soon: a photo tour of Oxford sights! By which I mean the filming locations of Harry Potter.

I LOVE MAGNUM. Somehow I still haven't managed to have one since I've been here, probably since I'm stocked up on mint Aero bars, Ben's cookies, and this delicious little 5000-cal shortbread number with chocolate and caramelized nuts that I got at the market today.
